My Doctrinal Statement on Pneumatology

I. The deity of the Holy Spirit

I believe that there is only one God, who is one triune God, in three distinct Persons – the Father, the Son (Christ), and the Holy Spirit, who are coequal and coeternal (Isa. 44:6; 45:5; Gen. 1:26-27; Matt. 3:17). The Holy Spirit – as a Person of the Trinity – is unique in His role, yet simultaneously identical as deity (John 16:13; Titus 3:4-6; 1 Pet. 1:2; 2 Pet. 1:1; Heb. 1:1-3). The deity of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 2:11) is confirmed in Scripture (Rom. 8:9-11; Acts 16:6-7; Eph. 4:4). Likewise, His divine attributes affirm His deity – manifested in life (Rom. 8:2), omniscience (1 Cor. 2:10-12), omnipotence (Job 33:4), omnipresence (John 14:17; Ps. 139:7), truth (John 14:17), love (Gal. 5:22), holiness (Matt. 12:32), eternity (Heb. 9:14). As such, the Holy Spirit, has the same attributes as the Father and the Son.

II. The personality (personhood) of the Holy Spirit

I believe and affirm that the Holy Spirit is a distinct Person (as Person of the triune Godhead) and has personal attributes, such as intellect (1 Cor. 2:10), knowledge (1 Cor. 2:11), a mind (Rom. 8:27; Eph. 1:17), emotions (Eph. 4:30), and a will (James 1:18; Acts 16:6). Scripture confirms His personhood (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13-14).

III. The work of the Holy Spirit

I believe that the works of the Holy Spirit confirm His deity and are part of God’s perfect plan, will and timing, as promised and manifested by Christ (John 16:13) and are revealed in our Lord’s incarnation (Matt. 1:20), anointing (Luke 4:18), continually filling Him (Mark 1:12; Luke 4:1), played a part in His death (Heb. 9:14), and Jesus’ resurrection (Eph. 1:19-20; Ps. 16:10; John 10:18; Rom. 1:4; 1 Pet 3:18).

Also, His divine works include creation (Gen 1:2), inspiration of Scripture (2 Pet. 1:21), regeneration (Titus 3:5), intercession (Rom. 8:26), sanctification (2 Thess. 2:13), helping saints (John 14:16), bearing witness (John 15:26; Rom. 8:16), praying on behalf of others (Rom. 8:26-27), searching the depths of God (1 Cor. 2:10), knowing God’s thoughts (1 Cor. 2:11), forbidding or prohibiting certain actions (Acts 16:6-7), speaking (Acts 8:29; 13:2), able and willing to distribute spiritual gifts as He desires (1 Cor. 12:11), being grieved by the sin of believers (Eph. 4:30), helping us to remain in God’s will (Acts 15:28). The Holy Spirit, as advocate and helper, promised by Christ, guides, indwells, convicts, restores and seals believers (John 14:16; 15:26; Rom. 8:9, 26; Eph. 1:13; 1 Cor. 2:10-11), as guarantee, that we are eternally secure in Christ.
